Wildlife artist, designer, devoted environmentalist and a woman deeply dedicated to children’s health and well being, Pamela Baldwin has walked a steady path of achievement and recognition throughout her decidedly American life. A thirteenth generation American of French, English and Scottish blood, Baldwin believes that her aesthetic sensibility was formed as a very young child in a family marked by strong women with vivid histories and enough adventuring to enchant a child’s curious mind.
Each of these women, including a wonderfully named “Grandma Great”, was graced with an artistic streak that revealed itself in lifetimes of travel and collecting: porcelains, silver, Chinese snuff bottles, crystal, glass and art. The traditional fine arts of the home - knitting, embroidery, lace making and needlepoint were learned from her elders. The simple observations of a young girl, surrounded by keen eyes and refined artistic tastes, clearly were shaped by those around her.
Born in Maryland, raised in the Midwest, and living for 30 wonderful years by the San Francisco Bay, Baldwin now makes her home in Raleigh, NC. Her day, rather than being greeted by the blustery basso of the San Francisco foghorns, is often started sketching the traffic around the bird feeders near the stream behind her studio. Her dogs, Katie and Blue, join in by chasing the squirrels that work so hard to reach the feeders.
It is evident from the moment you walk into Pamela Baldwin’s house and studio that her world remains connected to family and previous generations. At the very same time, as with all of Baldwin’s designs and personal philosophy, the aura in the charming home filled with books and surrounded by gardens, is one of the future. To quote one of her heroes, Dr. Jane Goodall, Baldwin lives with a profound belief that there is “reason for hope”, and reason to believe that each of us can make a difference.

Teacher of painting and drawing

Category: Art / Creative
The "YES, you CAN" classes are taught with an easy, straightforward step by step system. I learned to paint in this way - only 11 years ago! And I have had people in my classes who haven't painted since grade school - and who were convinced they couldn't be taught. After every workshop, the participants go home with something worth framing! If I could learn to paint this way - so can you! The workshops are typically 2 days long, held at my Raleigh studio - or at your location. Typically we start with botanicals, or butterflies to learn the basics. Other workshops cover painting needlepoint canvas', drawing animals, journals, and Illuminated letters.
